I like to make sure all my students know each other. Possibly do duet or trio together. Music is fun that way. My worst nightmare is to go and see a concert that everyone just goes up quietly does their thing, back to their seat. Then go home. I want to see lots of colour, lots of good looking people, lots of good music and lots of fun, laughters and cheers.
I would like to see my showcase to motivate and give good pressure to students because no one wants to look bad when there are two of you performing together.
I put lots of thoughts into designing program like this. People have no idea how hard that it. You want to concert be short but you don't want to work with others? Then you better go. Good luck finding a teacher who can cover all your wishes.
Everyone has different voice type, different personality and ability. Everyone also has different commitments of million things they do. And our lesson is always one on one. There is little opportunity for us to rehearse so my program has to be realistic too.
I understand the concert is fun so everyone wants to participate. Even when it clashes with other things they still want to come. So I get questions like this "Can I go first?" " Can I leave first?" " Can I do with my friend cause we can rehearse with each other? " " Can I not do with him cause he is not good and so and so is better I like her".
I get very cranky when I hear it. I will tell you why.
Please think about this, "What are we really teaching kids?"
Yes we are teaching kids to be good performers with good technique and good presence. We also try to teach kids to work with others. But all these are not the most important things for me.
I like to teach kids to NOT TO BE SELFISH.
It's a duet concert and you want to do a solo first?
Firstly people don't understand there is a way we design a showcase program. The opening is always starting strong with experience singers who can open with power and flair. The arrangement of the program is not depends on who can stay longer who needs to leave early. It depends on the quality of my students there and what are the songs we have there to show. So it mixes well and always keeps it interesting for the audience.
Please imagine you are the other kids in the audience. They are following what Susie asked them to do. Then they see you go in doing your thing and leave straightaway without a care of what they do.
This is not what I teach you for. The last thing I want in the studio is self centre kids who want things their way.
When you want to do something, you commit to it totally then you will succeed.
If you have school musical rehearsal on, you go to school music rehearsal because without you there it will be very inconvenient to others in school. If you choose to come to my concert, you stay and watch and support others.
Whatever you give to the world, you will receive in abundance.
I want to teach kids this because I teach your children way more than just music.
If you want to work with me, choose one.
And do it the best you can with that choice.
