There are really not much things that are bad here. At least not for a first time visitor like me.
1. The heat
The locals kept telling me that it's only 35 degrees now it's so nice. I was like, are you kidding me? there is no way I can walk under the sun. The heat is just excruciating. No wonder they build such big malls cause you can't go out and do much once the sun is up. I can't imagine whats like in July.
2. There is the dark side of Dubai
There are a lot of people doing it tough here. This is not the place with just rose and gold. Some Indian and lower status workers were scammed to this place as hard ship labours who live in extremely dehumanised condition and no authority has any concern towards the issue. The rapid development of Dubai has such a dark side.
Dubai has such chaotic traffic condition during working hours. Everyone drives because only the lower class people catch the bus (I tried yesterday and swear never again. It often stops in the middle of nowhere and walking a few minutes under the sun is just torture). Metro can get very crowded during peak hour too. I catch taxi a lot cause of the convenience but it does adds on the cost (and I still get a little tense when it comes to sitting in the taxi overseas). A lot of place you simply just can't get there easily without a car. Under the heat you also can't walk outside so I do think traffic is a nuisance.
4. Long working hour and stress
I used to think it will be so good to work and live in Dubai. Now after meeting so many professional people coming from around the world I know there is no work life balance here. There is no super for you to retire with. The worst thing is that when you are no longer working you will be kicked out of the country regardless how long have you been staying here. It's a place with no future aspect. Let along work life balance. We are not working or staying here so we are ok. It's good for holidays.
5. Everything is about money.
If you are rich, you will have a good life here. If you are not, you are doomed. Simple.
1. Extremely safe
I don't think I have ever felt so safe catching the taxi by myself at 1 am. This is a muslim country it has very strict law so no one dares to commit the crime easily. You can walk by yourself at night or catch the taxi and still feel extremely safe. The property manager told me that even I have my doors open no one will go in to steal things. At least in Dubai thats the case.
2. It has everything
Sometimes when I go to Europe I feel like very authentic asian food. Dubai and Abu Dhabi even has the most authentic Chinese hot pot. All the international things you can think of they will be imported here. If you have money, literally everything is possible.
3. free home delivery to everywhere of anything
I never know you can just order a soy sauce or even just 1 toilet paper they will have someone deliver to your door free of charge. You can literally stay at home and everything will be taken care of.
4. Shoppings and restaurants open till midnight or 1 am.
Dubai just never goes to sleep. It's hot during the day so people start to function after work. The city doesn't sleep.
5. All sorts of people are here
The world is such a small place if you come into Dubai. You will meet people from Syria, Saudi, Kuwait just the places you never think of possible (and peaceful). All the people I met are extremely intelligent, professional and inspiring.
6. Public toilets are so clean and always free
One of the worst thing about going to Europe is that I always have to pay for the use of public toilet and they are not always clean either. In Dubai the toilet is everywhere and always extremely clean.
7. It's not that far away from Sydney compare to Europe. 15 hours of direct flight is actually not that bad considering Sydney is so far away from everywhere. If you catch Emirate airline you might hardly have jet lag due to the flight time. And I must say that Emirate Airline is just awesome.
8. no alcohol
For a non drinker this place is paradise. No need to drink to fit in, and no drunken dudes on the streets.
There are a lot more good things about Dubai. I love this place. Shall be back again every year .
Travel is not an escape for work. It's a discovery for life.
Every 10 weeks I take off to somewhere. Sometimes with family, sometimes with friends, sometimes by myself. If you think about it there are a lot of places that you need to go when you are younger. If waiting for later you will never get to go.
I booked the hotel for Korea trip in Dec. I think it's wiser to book earlier. Also called the friend in Dubai to organise our upcoming trip in Oct to Dubai and Abu Dhabi. I remembered Megan in our toastmaster meeting often said she works for travel. I don't work for travel. I work and travel to live.
Next April it's either Berlin or Barcelona.
I have such trouble adapting to this heat in Taiwan.
Skin problem, headache, heat stroke, eye problem etc...Haven’t been back to Taiwan in summer for such long time ....oh dear.
Let’s write about it another time.
Still caught up with friends and families and did lots of interesting things . Apart from the heat, Taiwan is paradise.
Wherever you have family and friends excitedly wait for you to be there, that is Home to me.
前天聽到一群長輩說在他們這樣的stage they had all the money, status and fame 不過到他們這個年紀有健康的身體和good relationship with others 是人生快樂的最大原因。 有和沒有的老人真的很明顯and your personality and attitude create your own reality later in life 。nothing to do with money, marital status and all about how you are with people.
My Hongkong -Taiwan flight cancelled at the last minute. Qantas didn’t do anything. You have two options.
1. Arriving in Hongkong, fight at the Qantas counter. Saying it’s not my fault you should do something and arrange our accomdation. So many of my friends will choose this way I know. Just by listening to how they get angry for me on Facebook I know they will get so cranky and fight till the end.
This reaction only has one outcome . You get all exhausted and work up and at the end you might still need to find a hotel yourself anyway.
2. Just find a hotel yourself . If the travel insurance can claim you can always claim it. If not, it’s a mini stop over holiday for one night that you will normally pay anyway.
Yes it costs $300 to find a decent last minute hotel that is still available when you search online at 10 pm at the airport . However what’s the price of being calm , happy and relax at the start of your holiday?
I believe a lot of things in life you cannot choose the cause but you can certainly choose your reaction to it. The reaction to these circumstance will determine the experience and the quality of your life.
PS: although I don’t mind to have more than 5 hours sleep in this hotel ...my Hongkong stopover only consists of Airport-Luxe Manor hotel (6 hours)-back to airport . I didn’t even step on the ground of Hongkong soil...
We try to live a holiday without plan. Today is day 1 of no plan trip. Let’s just see how the day unfold, like what my Czech psychic friend said.
Some morning shopping .
Dye my hair blue.
Had great lunch at home .
Massage and chill
Coffee and afternoon tea.
5 pm we all met up and travelled one hour to dansui.
Got on the ferry to Bali to see the sunset.
Market food around dansui night market
Night street shopping and dinner
Arrive home at 9:30.
I can’t wait to see how tomorrow unfolds.....
#justsee how the universe takes you on Home coming holidays
In Sydney I am too asian and in Taipei I am too aussie . We are the so called “banana generations “ (more the overcooked type). I call it “the Best of the east meets west”- We have the discipline and diligence of the east and the creativity and fun of the West (at least I do). I try to put this into my students’ heads too. These days when I go mental at them like an asian tiger mum or burst into 2 languages randomly, no one blinks an eye. It’s all perfectly normal. The world will one day get closer and closer.
I pride myself for living a very productive life. The result is quite extraordinary . 如果你太著重於你自己的計劃你並不會感受和聽到what’s coming to you . 回去雪梨以後我會let go a huge amount of extreme planning and more in touch with the flow.
我從小到大都很外向thank the lord 算是人緣不錯的人，even though I don’t stick with one partner like others 身邊向來都有很多的朋友和家人。 後來馬上就覺得what a good opportunity ！let’s over come this fear of being alone in Czech Republic. 我的卡有錢and I speak fluent English。 I think traveling alone in a foreigner country I am sure very soon I will be flying again. This teaches me so much about ovecoming fear about things you never try.
但是也因為他們讓我們每一個人都會講fluent English, in all professions and live a good life and worldly views. 當然不是每一個移民來的人第二代都很強, 我覺得我們大家也一樣在雪梨很努力的工作和奮鬥and all of us are very good at what we are doing . It’s opportunity plus hard work and luck.
Have good people skill, speak fluent English
而是 a spectacular opportunity to reflect, to appreciate and to move forward.
