When the student put their phone on the music stand the first thing I asked them to do is to turn on airplane mode.
If I don’t do that we will continue hearing never ending din din din from their mobile. And that’s every single one of them .
Every single one of my students is so popular. I don’t even know how it works. Who are those people never ending texting on instagram, snapchats and who knows where .
No wonder at this day and age all the kids are getting more and more anxious . The social media certainly doesn’t help . But I of ten wonder what can parents do? You can’t take away the phone from the kids either. It’s a way of communication between friends and that’s what everyone does these days .
I can ask them to turn to aeroplane mode but parents can’t. You also can’t simply just say, no phone for my kids (like what my brother said. The problem is his daughter is only 7. Wait till 14 ok)
Hard to be parents these days. I feel for you parents.
I really do .
Today is quite a full on day. A friend of mine and I had a big cht about finance and investing . I thought I am number savvy enough but he is really on top of this game.
I couldn’t help but amazed on the commercial property he purchased last year. In Just one year the evaluation can go up the roof like that. Of course there is lots of factors But I got inspired in taking different directions and actions.
When I catch up with my grown up students I always tell them to save early and be financially smart to invest early.
You can’t beat the power of compound interest. The earlier the kids know the better.
My life is quite chaotic these days.
Concert is coming up so I spend quite a lot of time organisimg everything.
1. Talking to the theatre to get the website on Ticktek
2. Talking to charity that we will donate the money to
3. Cutting students backing track
4 program arrangements
5. Collecting photos and work on PowerPoint project so when they sing the have cute photos behind them on stage.
Those are on top of teaching, arranging and choreography too.
There are only 4 weeks to go before all the exams and concert stuff need to be done. It’s stressful indeed.
And then comes refinance.
I noticed my 2 investments loans have such high interest rates so I have been speaking to morgage brokers. These days loans for investment properties are not as easy as before so the bank needs to see so many documents. Finally I found a good broker to get everything done.
How amazing is that just by switching banks I save nearly $10000 each year for the interest. It’s insane. The chaos is certainly worth it.
Still have kids doing speech eisteddfod this sat. When there is competition I feel more alive. I love it .
Another 4 weeks I am off to Dubai. This year really goes incredibly fast.
Don’t you love the kids cute baby photos on big screen? Look at all these faces. Then you see what they are now and how they sing, even I go “awwwwww”
The standard/quality of my students is very high. Especially in the age group of 13-15. They all have been with me for many years and every single one is strong in different way.
When you are very good, there is a problem.
The fear of failure. Everyone wants to be perfect in front of others. So when there is a concert or competition everyone is searching for the PERFECT song.
Week after week there will be rejecting from the previous choice, indecisiveness and frustration.
I told the kids, there is no perfect song. In fact, there is no perfect life, perfect job, perfect man or perfect age, perfect circumstances or perfect opportunity.
You pick one song that you reasonably like and believe you can do well. Use your technique, use your skill, love it with all your heart and do the best you can. You develop silent confidence to it then you nail it.
Suddenly that becomes your perfect song because everyone likes the way you do it and you think it's perfect.
There is no perfect song. Only you can make anything almost perfect.
I talk all day. So I hate calling people. Absolutely don't like talking on the phone.
But I called a parent.
Something is not right. And I was right.
I don't understand why so many Australian teens have depression, anxiety and all kinds of issues.
To be honest I did felt quite upset . The parent said the lessons with me are like therapy sessions for the kid.
Why has the world become like this? Perhaps I am too naive to understand. I am thinking hard what else I can do to help.
What is happening? It shouldn't be like this.
i talk about students all the time but in fact teaching is probably just 50 % of what I do (I look like I am on holidays all the time but that’s not true. There are a lot of things that I do that my students don’t need to know)
That’s why I often have Monday anxiety. There are so many things that the to do list just never seems to end no matter how organised I am.
Suddenly I remember someone said “ I had the blues because I had no shoes . Until upon the street I met a man who had no feet”.
It’s all in perspective.
Kids are really the reflection of their parents.
I receive calls all the time. Some parents you can even get a sense of what they are like by listening to their messages. Do you think I reply to them all? Yes I do. But the way I reply highly depends on my six sense of their personalities. These days I am almost functioning like a psychic. My guess is almost 99.9 percent accurate (I don't even know what that 0.1 percent is).
Lets just say appreciation and respect goes a long way.
Sometimes I see some parents and feel really sorry for their kids and I haven't even seen the kids.
Same goes to the situation when I met a kid at the first time and wonder how brilliant his/her parents must be.
Anyway just a ramble. I will talk about this in next live show. Thank God the live show is in mandarin. HAHAHAHHA
I was reading Dale Carnagies book the other day and note down some points on my phone to remind myself. I might copy and paste them here and share with you.
Have a new second half year resolution.
I figure that I really need to cut off my phone usage. Just too addicted to my phone . It’s not good for my eye sight and it’s just not a very efficient use of time.
Now I have a set time that I will allow myself to check on the phone.
I must say it’s quite a liberating feeling and you notice a lot more with the surroundings.
Not an easy task but I am trying my best.
Maybe you should check your phone less too? Hahaha
Do you have a good time diary?
I always constantly review and write new things on my good time diary.
What is a good time diary? It’s a diary that you record what makes you happy and passionate . What drives you crazy. It’s not just about hobbies it can also be related to work or life in general. You have more understanding of yourself and therefore shape your life to the things and activities that create more good time diary entry.
I have three things that if I do I will totally forget the time and emerge in it .
1. When I teach duets or good singers who has been with me for a long time with very strong technique already and have a very polish work to prepare and perform. I love seeing hard working good singers who already know their work well and my job is to bring it to the next level. Those working progress is challenging, higher level of artistry.
2 when I was doing Live engaging with audience about topics and discussions. I absolutely love Live engagements and interviews. Especially interview with a guest it challenges my brain to engage audience, interviewer and also continue to think about next conversation at the same time. It’s the most fun thing ever.
3. When I was doing public speaking competition or singing/talking front of audience. People like us just like spotlight and stage. We just do.
What are the things that drives you mental that you drag doing? Write it down and avoid it.
I don’t like teaching adult beginners piano. Total adult beginners are slow and I really don’t cope with slow. Haha it sounds bad and it’s true. I no longer teach beginner piano cause it just drags me....
Have a good time diary. You will always want to do more things you love.
